Are you looking for safe vehicles before deciding which one is right for you? If so, then you will need to research several before choosing one. So let’s take a look at the Nissan LEAF safety rating.

How safe is the 2020 Nissan LEAF?

The 2020 Nissan LEAF received a 5-Star Overall  Safety Rating from the NHTSA and the highest score of “Good” from the IIHS. Combine that with the 3.50-Star Owner and 4.4/10 Expert Review Ratings from Vehicle History, and you will see that you have what appears to be a safe vehicle.

But obviously, the owner reviews only give this vehicle a 3.50-star rating. So let’s take a look at the crash tests, safety features, and the most frequently asked questions. This should help you determine if this is the right vehicle for you… or not.

2020 Nissan LEAF Crash Test Rating Results

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Test Results (IIHS)

The IIHS rated the LEAF as follows.

Crashworthiness:

Good: moderate overlap front, side, head restraints, and seats.

Crash Avoidance & Mitigation

Not Tested: front crash prevention vehicle-to-vehicle standard system.

Child Seat Anchors:

Marginal: LATCH ease of use.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)

The NHTSA gave the LEAF a 5-star overall safety rating. Here are the results of the crash tests.

Frontal Crash Test:

The overall frontal crash test rating was 4 stars. The front crash test rating for the driver side was 5 stars. The front passenger-side crash test rating was 4 stars. This was for a head-on collision between similar vehicles, each going 35 mph.

Side Crash Test:

The overall side crash test received 5 stars. The combined side barrier and pole rating for the front and rear seats was 5 stars. The side barrier for the driver and rear passenger was also 5 stars. The side pole barrier test simulates a vehicle crashing into a fixed obstacle.

Rollover Crash Test:

The Nissan LEAF received a 4-star rollover resistance rating. This test measures how much risk is involved in the rollover of a single-vehicle that has lost control. A 4 star rollover rating is common for this type of vehicle.

Now let’s go over the safety features of the LEAF.

The 2020 Nissan LEAF Safety Features Explained

Here are this vehicle’s safety features and what they do.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

The electronic stability control will automatically brake each wheel individually so it doesn’t spin out. This helps control unexpected hazards and the potential for a rollover, and it helps avoid a side collision.

ABS and Driveline Traction Control

An anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a traction control system that will stop the wheels on your vehicle from locking up while you are braking. The ABS will also prevent the wheels from spinning after the vehicle has lost traction.

Dual-Stage Airbags

The LEAF has multiple airbags. It has dual-stage seat-mounted side driver and passenger airbags. It also has first and second-row curtain airbags. Airbags deploy when the vehicle senses an accident. The airbags protect the occupants’ head, body, arms, and legs from injury.

Intelligent Blind Spot Intervention

This safety feature helps the driver avoid a collision by detecting a vehicle that is driving in the adjacent lane and is in the vehicle’s blind spot. The system alerts the driver if the driver begins to change lanes when there is a vehicle in the blind spot. It will simultaneously lightly apply the brakes to help the vehicle remain in the lane.

Intelligent Forward Collision Warning with AEB

This is a warning system that alerts the driver of the potential for a collision when another vehicle in the lane ahead of them suddenly applies his brakes.

Intelligent Lane Intervention Lake Keeping Assist (I-LI)

This feature displays a dashboard alert and sounds a chime when the driver is drifting out of his lane. It also assists the driver so he or she can avoid leaving the lane. It does this by applying the brakes.

Intelligent Lane Intervention Lane Departure Warning (I-LI)

If the vehicle’s intelligent lane intervention lane departure system senses the driver is leaving the lane, it displays an alert on the dashboard, then sounds a warning chime. This system will then assist the driver to avoid drifting from the driving lane by applying the brakes.

Low Tire Pressure Warning

A low tire pressure sensor monitors all the tires and will alert the driver if any of the vehicle’s tires are low.

Multiple Airbags

This vehicle has driver and passenger dual-stage front airbags. It also has curtain first and second row airbags. And, it has driver and passenger knee airbags, as well as rear side impact airbags.

Rearview Monitor Back-Up Camera

This is a back-up camera that is mounted on the back of the vehicle, and the images are displayed on the rearview mirror. It shows the driver what is behind the vehicle while it is backing up. And, it will alert the driver if an obstruction is detected.
