Nissan Murano Problems: The Truth Is In The Details

The Nissan Murano has received a lot of positive attention for its features and security. Yet, like all vehicles, some problems develop over time, and when they do, consumers need to know about them so they can make the right buying decision for their needs.

What Nissan Murano problems exist that you should know about?

There are a few key concerns over numerous model years.

Some include:

  • Adaptive cruise control failures
  • Brake problems and failures
  • Transmission problems
  • Navigation problems
  • Steering problems

Our goal here is to explain some of these problems and provide you with insight into what you can expect if you buy the Nissan Murano. It’s also a good idea to check the Vehicle History of the car you’re planning to buy before doing so.

Adaptive Cruise Control Failures

Consumers purchasing the 2019 Nissan Murano have reported concerns with the cruise control feature. This vehicle has both regular and adaptive cruise control, both of which are designed to improve performance and fuel economy.

Drivers reported that the adaptive cruise control does not respond to road conditions the way it should. Consumers note that, even though it recognized it was going over the speed set, the vehicle did not decelerate.

Another concern is that the vehicle does not slow down as it should on a downslope. The vehicle can gain 10 to 15 additional miles per hour without slowing down as it should. Technicians could not replicate the problem and noted normal function.

Brake Problems and Failures

The brakes are one component of the vehicle you don’t want to see a lot of problems with, and the Nissan Murano does not have too many. Some drivers reported that the automatic braking feature may note a failure warning, but this indicator goes away randomly.

In addition, some drivers state this feature tends to brake without warning and no noticeable reason to do so. This may be a concern related to the driver-assist features on some Nissan Muranos.

Drivers report numerous problems with these safety features. Some received warnings such as “unavailable front radar obstruction” but there is nothing blocking the front sensors. These problems could be related to a glitch in the sensor. Collision warning notifications are also common.

Transmission Problems

Car CVT Transmission From Bottom Side

One of the most common problems with the 2015 Nissan Murano is its transmission. This model year had numerous reports of transmission concerns, with the main problem related to a jerking movement. Reports of transmission problems include the vehicle suddenly lurching forward.

Others noted increasing RPMs and no movement. Others had problems with acceleration while driving.

One of the key concerns with this vehicle is that it contains a CTV transmission. These transmissions — across many models of vehicles — have been problematic. These transmissions are known for having problems with jerking and random acceleration.

The good news is that some of these problems are covered in an extended warranty for these vehicles. This may significantly improve the outcome, but it does not mean the vehicle is any safer for it.

Other reported transmission problems include vibration, locking up, and stalling out, as well as transfer case oil leaks. Some drivers also noted a full transmission failure and the need to replace it.

Navigation Problems

Also noted about the 2015 Nissan Murano is the numerous navigation system failures. Owners reported problems with this key component right away — in new vehicles with full warranties. Some of the problems related to outdated and not updated software. This has been a concern for multiple drivers in the 2015 model year.

Other owners note a number of problems with picking up data using the GPS system. It is inaccurate or, in some cases, not functional. Owners stated the system seems to be fine, but the directions are flawed or simply stop responding.

Steering Problems

Owners of the 2014 Nissan Murano have noted a number of concerns regarding the vehicle’s steering system. Specifically, they note problems with noises coming from the engine (though it may be the transmission) when they turn the steering wheel. When this is done at higher speeds, the problem is more significant.

Other owners report problems with the power steering itself. At low speeds, it tends not to work well at all, requiring drivers to put more muscle behind the movements. This includes low speed turns as well as parallel parking or moving through a parking lot.

Drivers have reported this with both the forward and reverse movements. They also noted sounds coming from the system, such as a whine.

The power steering failures are common in the 2013 model year as well. Drivers noted the power steering just fails randomly. This tends to happen at lower speeds, but the mileage of these cars is rather low. That indicates a more significant problem since the power steering system should have a much longer lifespan.

Technicians have reported no known issues. Some have stated that no diagnostic tests or codes have shown up for these problems. Nissan itself did not report any recalls or service bulletins on the system either.

Should You Buy a Nissan Murano With These Known Problems?

Here’s the good news. Even though older Nissan Murano vehicles have a much higher number of problems with safety features and mechanical components, that is not true for newer models.

Consumer complaints on models from 2012 on are fewer than most vehicles like them. That is good news.

If you are thinking about buying a pre-owned Nissan Murano, though, it is a good idea to learn more about the vehicle specifically. To do this, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. Input the VIN of the car. Then, read through the customer complaints, manufacturer service bulletins, and any noted recalls. This gives you the info you need to make a better buying decision.

Even better, check out what other owners are saying and read some reviews on the Nissan Murano.

There is a recall of Murans. The front end has severe vibrations. My dealer said I have too many miles, Nissan said my Vin does not match the recall. I still have the problem. This will cast me $2,100.00 to repair. The last Nissan I will ever buy. This was number 6 over the past 30 years.
