Red 2020 Nissan Titan From Front-Driver Side

Any time a person considers buying a new full-size pickup, the durability and dependability of that truck are going to be major factors in the decision. This is why buyers should exercise a bit of caution when considering the 2020 Nissan Titan reliability ratings.

How reliable is the 2020 Nissan Titan?

To put it politely, neither owners nor expert reviewers are excited about the 2020 Nissan Titan’s reliability. The truck failed to pick up any reliability awards in the crowded and highly competitive full-size pickup sector.

Vehicle History Reviews:

  • Owner Reviews: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Expert Reviews: 4.0 stars

Those are some fairly tepid scores. In this article, we’ll examine our own data on the 2020 Nissan Titan, as well as reliability ratings from trusted sources like JD Power and the NHTSA.

There’s one more thing: Sometimes the experts get it wrong. Despite all the shade being thrown at this truck, it just might be a hidden gem.

Nissan Titan’s Struggles

Ford, Chevrolet, and GM have all invested heavily in upgrading their full-size pickup models in recent years. Nissan finally announced in 2020 that it plans to do the same, with a projected $230 million expected for the next generation of Titan trucks.

Unfortunately, that’s too little, too late for the 2020 Nissan Titan. Despite the fact that this is a decent truck, other automakers have a big head start on the 2020 Titan. This could part of the reason the 2020 Nissan Titan’s reliability scores are lukewarm at best.

JD Power Reliability Score

Despite being on the market for nearly a year as of this writing, JD Power has still not completed a Dependability Study for the 2020 Nissan Titan. JD Power did suggest a Predicted Reliability rating on the truck, however: “About Average.”

Ouch! That squarely places the 2020 Nissan Titan well behind the same year’s Ford F-150, Chevy Silverado, Dodge Ram 1500, and even the GMC Sierra 1500.

NHTSA Ratings and Recalls

Here’s where everything gets turned on its head. Take a look at the number of NHTSA safety recalls against all the trucks we just mentioned, as well as their crash test ratings:

  • 2020 Ford F-150: seven safety recalls, four-star crash rating
  • 2020 Chevy Silverado: four safety recalls, no crash rating
  • 2020 Dodge Ram 1500: seven safety recalls, four-star crash rating
  • 2020 GMC Sierra 1500: five safety recalls, four-star crash rating
  • 2020 Nissan Titan: zero safety recalls, no crash rating

As of November 2020, the 2020 Nissan Titan has only generated a single owner complaint at the NHTSA—and no recalls. What happened? This is factual data, and it’s very difficult to argue with those numbers.

JD Power’s reliability rating for this truck was a prediction; they did not complete a full Dependability Study on the truck, and they may never do so after this much time has passed. However, after its first year on the market, it looks like the “Plain Jane” 2020 Nissan Titan was a better-designed truck than its flashier rivals running a couple of development years ahead.

2020 Nissan Titan Warranty

Another reliability area where the 2020 Nissan Titan stands out is the warranty. It is considerably better than the industry-standard, three-year, 36,000-mile warranty you will find on most trucks. Here are the Nissan Titan’s warranty figures:

  • Basic Warranty: five years or 100,000 miles
  • Powertrain Warranty: five years or 100,000 miles

2020 Nissan Titan Reliability Verdict

Let’s be honest: This is kind of a boring truck. The experts and owners agree on that much. However, in terms of reliability ratings (which are always a prediction), it looks like the experts missed the mark with the 2020 Nissan Titan. It may not be as exciting to own as its rivals, but you’ll spend less time at the dealing with safety recalls in a 2020 Nissan Titan.
