Overview of the Ram 1500

The Ram pickup truck has been an important component of trucks in the U.S. for some time. It was first produced by Chrysler from 1980 through 1998. Today, this full-size truck is manufactured by FCA US (which is really still Chrysler under a different name). The early models, though, were a line of light trucks. With some rebranding, they’ve grown up to be powerhouse competitors.

The current model year, the 2020 Ram 1500, is a part of the fifth generation of this truck. This generation features an HD version and updated interior and performance. The 2019 model, which was the first of the fifth generation, sold 633,694 vehicles for that model year in the U.S. That’s a clear winner in consumer appreciation.

Performance Features and Specs of the Ram 1500

The Ram 1500 lineup for the 2020 model year includes the Limited, Tradesman, Bighorn, Laramie, and Laramie Longhorn. With this model year, the company added the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine. That’s a powerful engine that has diesel towing capacity up to 12,560 pounds. It also comes with 480 foot-pounds of torque behind it. This really is impressive power.

Another option for the engine is the Hemi 5.7L V8 engine. It has a towing capacity of 12,570 pounds and features an eTorque hybrid technology. That means you can tow pretty much anything without a lot of trouble.

You can also choose a Hemi 5.7L V8 (without the eTorque) as well as a Pentastar eTorque 3.6L V6 – which is still a powerful vehicle in itself. Any of these are going to get the job done for most users.

The Tradesman vehicle offers the 3.6L V6 engine as the base option. It features an eight-speed automatic transmission. It gets 305 horsepower at 6400 rpm. With seating for up to six people, it has a nice design and an exceptional ride.

Focusing on the base model, the Limited, owners get a nice, stylish truck. It has ample luxury to it right from first view with a mesh grille and chrome accents throughout.

When it comes to fuel economy, the 2020 Ram 1500 with a 3.6-liter engine and six cylinders gets 22 mpg combined city/highway according to EPA estimates. That’s 20 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. The best level of fuel economy comes from the 3.0L, six-cylinder model, which provides 26 mpg city/highway.

For safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gives this vehicle a full five-star rating. It had a rollover risk rate of 19.8%, which was the lowest mark for the vehicle in terms of safety.

Other Notable Features of the Ram 1500

This vehicle is well-loved for many reasons. The awards it has won show that. It was ranked highest in driver appeal out of all large light-duty pickups, according to J.D. Powers. The 2020 model was also named the best brand of truck by U.S. News & World Report. Additionally, it has been named a Consumer Guide Best Buy for the last 12 years.

There’s much more to consider in this vehicle. For example, it has LED headlights and an integrated spoiler. It also has several wheel designs for drivers to choose from. The standard is an 18-inch rim.

When inside, you’ll find ample leg room, but your eyes will automatically dart to the technology. The cockpit is comfortable enough for a long eight-hour shift. The fourth generation Uconnect system is on board to help you stay connected.

It also has the best-in-class touchscreen. It offers a huge 12 inches of display incorporating Uconnect along with navigation. You can even pinch and zoom using the screen. It’s easy enough to hook up Android Auto or Apple CarPlay to the system.

We can’t overlook the key features that make it that much better. That includes the available multifunction tailgate that gives you ample control. The RamBox cargo management system is another option and is exclusive to this vehicle compared to others in its class.

In warranties, owners get:

  • 100,000 mile or five-year diesel powertrain limited warranty
  • 100,000 mile or five-year roadside assistance
