Black Subaru Forester in motion on dirt road - Vehicle History

When you’re thinking about buying a pre-owned car or truck, safety is top of your mind. How do you know the Subaru Forester you’re thinking about is really going to be reliable and safe enough to drive your family around in on a daily basis?

How safe is the 2020 Subaru Forester?

The 2020 Subaru Forester received a 5-Start Overall Safety Rating from NHTSA and the highest possible score of “Good” from IIHS. Combine this with a 4.75-Star Owner and 4.6/10 Expert Review from Vehicle History, and you have a strong option.

While this information is quite helpful in making a buying decision, there’s more to know about the safety rating and overall safety features on board this vehicle. We’ll break that down for you here, giving you the ability to buy with confidence.

2020 Subaru Forester Crash Test Rating

Crash tests are an excellent predictor of how safe a car or truck is. These organizations put these vehicles through numerous tests to find out what happens in a collision. That’s good news for us – it tells us what to expect. Here are the results for the Forester.

Insurance Institute for Highway Safety Test Results

The IIHS performs a number of tests on a vehicle to determine its safety rating. In crashworthiness, the 2020 Subaru Forester did well, receiving the highest level of “Good” across the board. That’s in areas such as the roof, front impact, and head restraint protection.

In crash avoidance testing, it gave the optional upgraded headlights just an “Acceptable” rating, which is slightly lower. Front crash prevention, both vehicle-to-vehicle, and vehicle-to-pedestrian scored a “Superior” rating from IIHS. The LATCH ease of use is “Good” as well.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Test Results

The NHTSA provides a strong safety rating for the 2020 Subaru Forester with a 5-Star Overall Safety Rating. The vehicle gets a full 5-star rating across the board in Overall Front Star Rating and in Side Crash Star Rating, with no marks down in terms of performance.

The only area of some concern is in the Rollover rating. The NHTSA only gives the Forester a 4-Star rating here. While the dynamic tip test did not result in the vehicle flipping over, they did assign a Rollover Risk of 16.9%, which is higher than others in its class.

Available Safety Tech on the 2020 Subaru Forester

Technology is making it easier to drive a vehicle with fewer risks. Sensors located around the car can make it possible for the car to steer you out of the way in some cases. This is done through driver assist and safety features like these on the Forester.

EyeSight Driver Assist Technology

Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology is the heart of the tech on this vehicle. It is a suite of features that make it possible for the vehicle to reduce collision incidents. Subaru notes that this tech has reduced the rate of rear-end crashes with injuries by 85%.

It does it through features such as these:

Pre-Collision Braking

If there is a potential collision risk, the vehicle automatically applies the brakes to slow the vehicle. It can also apply the full braking force in an emergency, allowing drivers to completely avoid a collision even if they are not paying attention.

Pre-Collision Throttle Management

Another way it protects is by controlling the function of the powertrain in the cases where there is a risk of colliding with something. The vehicle automatically reduces the power from the engine and, in doing so, may help to minimize the impact force and frontal damage.

Lane Keep Assist and Sway Warning

This feature monitors where you are on the road. It uses the line markings on the street to keep you inside of them. If you move outside of these marked lanes, the vehicle will alert you and, if necessary, steer the vehicle back into the right lane gently.

Adaptive Cruise Control

When you’re on the highway and conditions change – such as the driver in front of you suddenly slowing down. Adaptive Cruise Control helps to minimize risks. It will slow down the car to keep the predetermined distance between you and others in front of you even when traffic changes.

In the advanced version of cruise control, you can choose the amount of distance you want to stay behind another driver.

Here’s What Other People Also Ask About the Subaru Forester

Here are a few of the frequently asked questions about the Subaru Forester that you may be thinking about and the answers to them.

Is the Subaru Forester a safe car?

The answer here is yes. With the top-ratings listed by IIHS and NHTSA, it’s a good performer. It also has key features, like automatic emergency braking, that are standard (not all EyesSight Driver Assist Technology is, though).

What type of problems do Foresters have?

There have been a few problems with the engine (in the 2017 model year) and concerns with the airbags deploying properly in previous models. Other concerns include the electrical system, steering, and electronic stability control of the vehicle.

How many miles can a Subaru Forester last?

This vehicle requires solid maintenance and upkeep. There are some notes from previous owners that say their vehicle reached 200,000 miles before needing any significant repairs. Others report more miles than this, but it all comes down to taking care of the car.

Is the Subaru tech package on all trim models?

This changes from year to year. On the 2020 model lineup, there are many standard features, including most EyeSight driving safety features. However, optional upgrades are available, including to the tech but also the vehicle’s tires, headlights, and other exterior features. Check the specs of the vehicle before buying.

Great car but some questionable features.
The Subaru forester is very comfortable, stylish, and reliable. I am very happy with my purchase! However the reason I rated the Forrester a 4/5 is because of 3 minor, albeit very annoying, features. The first is that whenever you are on a phone call or someone calls you and you accept, you no longer have access to your digital speedometer. Rather, in place of the digital speedometer, a message saying “call in progress” pops up... Yeah because I need to know when I am on the phone versus what speed I am going...! Second, the Subaru will not hold your preferred driving settings. For example I prefer driving in the sport mode and have to adjust the mode each time I start my car. Lastly, the cruise control only increases in increments of 5 mph. Again, these are the only issues I have with this car and they are minor in the grand scheme of things, but it makes me wonder how Subaru thought these features would be 1) user friendly and 2) helpful in any way.

The Subaru forester reliability and comfort.
The vehicle is impressive in terms of its performance and reliability particularly because of the censor when you come too close with other vehicles, and the fact that the front lights automatically turn on when the engine is. As to comfort, I must say it has enough space for a family, but would be better if it would have more elbow room especially when there is a car seat installed, because it limits moving space. Nevertheless, it is still spacious enough for seating when there is a car seat. It would also help if it has cup or drink coasters inside the car which makes it comfortable for long drives and for eating inside to prevent spillage.

2020 Subaru forester touring package has everything you need in a small SUV!
This car has several features that make driving much more comfortable and enjoyable. My favorite feature is the auto dimming side and rear view mirrors. This is wonderful when driving at night. There are countless safety features such as blind spot detection, reverse and forward automatic braking, eyesight detection, etc. There are also several features for comfort such as heated seats, heated steering wheel, dual air conditioning, power seats, etc. I also love the sunroof! This car is very enjoyable to drive and I have had no regrets since purchasing.

All the details of the car are in there!
The auto / self-driving is a really cool tool. It is a bit scary, but works well enough. It has a really good sunroof, drives well enough. But, it is also smaller than what my truck was, so I do not like that. The tech in it is cool, I like the apple car play quite a bit. The Sirius XM radio is great, I really like Margaritaville radio. Let's see, what I do not like... To small, can be a bit bumpy, handles well. Seats are comfy, lots of dirt and stuff seems to go into the dash and does not wipe off good.

One of a kind SUV crossover with tons of features!
This car is a dream! It drives and handles well. The adaptive cruise control is awesome. I love not having to start and stop the car in traffic or cruising on the freeway. The adaptive steering is great too but I prefer to have my hands on the wheel. The large windows and huge sunroof are a game changer, so much light and easy to see. The backup camera is clear and easy to use. I would recommend this car to anyone. It is my first SUV and it is easy to drive. The seats are comfortable and well made.

Great vehicle. Good for snow and has nice uphill speed. Great gas mileage.
I have a 2020 Subaru forester. I have only had the car for two months and I absolutely love it. I live in a state where it snows a lot and it drives great in the snow. The vehicle drives so smooth especially on the freeway. It also has great uphill speed. The seats are so comfy. My favorite feature about the vehicle is the rear view camera for when I am backing up. I haven't had any problems with the vehicle yet. All together it is a lovely car.

Great vehicle! Highly recommend.
Very comfortable and stylish on the inside. I have not had any problems with it yet! It would be nice if the outside was a bit more 'beefy,' but that is just the Subaru look for the foresters at the moment. It handles great in the snow and has options for both mud and snow depth. It has a good amount of features that allow you to personalize the vehicle to your liking.

Safe stylish family vehicle.
The Subaru forester has many safety features that make me feel extra secure in using this as my family vehicle. The forester sport has an extra flare and features to help for trips up north and off road for camping. We were unsure if we'd have enough space for the family but this vehicle has been perfect, spacious and plenty of room for all of our cargo.

All around amazing vehicle.
The back seats are very spacious for multiple children and for adults, while also having a very large trunk space. Very smooth ride, the shocks are durable! I feel safe driving it on a regular basis with my child in the car. The adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist is amazing for long road trips. It is all around a great performing vehicle.

Subaru forester 2020, excellent car all around.
This car is extremely reliable, comfortable and easy to drive. It does exceptionally well in the snow, it also has good visibility and plenty of storage. The safety features work well and have prevented an accident or complication more than once. The features are customizable, modern, and state of the art. Could not recommend this car enough.

Spacious but overly cautious!
The forester is spacious and was really selected because I will now have two children. Something that is a drawback for me is the stopping mechanism it does at every stop light. Also I consider myself a safe driver but the safety assets that stops your car if you get too close to another car can be quite a pain when trying to switch lanes.

Great safe and reliable vehicle.
It is a very safe and comfortable vehicle. It comes with many technology features that I love like the back up camera, the automatic hatch, and the adaptive cruise control. It is very comfortable both to be inside and how it rides on the road. It handles the rough Michigan roads extremely well and also feels safe for winter driving.

Safety and style, amazing on long road trips and short rides.
Great handling and power. My Subaru has amazing safety features such as keeping you in your lane and maintaining a distance from cars in front of you. I love the ability to use apple carplay and play my music through the car. The back seats fold down extremely easy. The safety features and the great ride make me love this car.

The safest car I have ever driven.
It is not really a problem, but, there are so many feature that it takes a little while to learn them all without your car manual beside you. The car is amazing. The design engineers have done fantastic job. The warning light when something is behind you has kept me from hitting a pedestrian in a store parking lot twice.

2020 Subaru forester review.
I love having 4 wheel drive. The car has paced cruise control and lane assistance which makes me feel safe when driving. There is enough space in the backseat for passengers to sit comfortably and enough space in the trunk for larger loads. I only wish that the car had rear air vents for passengers sitting in the back.

Safety on the road. The safest car I have ever owned. Has so many features.
This car is the safest car I have ever owned. I've had it in sand without getting stuck, handles as good as a sports car, and safety features are amazing. The cruise control keeps you at a safe distance and will even stop the car and then start you on your way again without touching brake or accelerator.

2020 Subaru forester sport.
No problems whatsoever so far. I have only owned it for 1 year and have put 6000 miles on it. I am especially pleased with the safety features on my forester. Eyesight front collision prevention, lane departure warning, lane-keeping assist, rear collision prevention, and blind-spot monitoring.

Going from a sedan to an SUV is a big change.
Just purchased the car so I have no problems yet the lane drift alert is irritating and I haven't figured out if I can turn it off. It would have been nice to have an easy lift hatchback. The console seems off to me I feel like the cup holder should be up front not at the back of the console.

The adventure mobile: great style, great function.
Reliable car in the winter snow in the northeast. Comfortable seating with ample leg room and plenty of space in the back to transport groceries and large items. Nice display for media. Has Sirius radio and apple CarPlay. Great navigation on the display so I do not have to look at my phone.

Subaru manageability and style.
No problems. It is safe, comfortable, handles well in all conditions. Solid car. I love the way it handles. I turns are easy. Acceleration is excellent. The blind spots alerts help too. Very safe car. The cargo space is wonderful. Just bought a TV console. And it fit perfectly in the back.

Amazingly luxurious and safe.
I am in love with my forester. It is spacious and comfortable at the same time. It drives so smoothly and has plenty of features to keep you safe while on the road! As well as a sunroof and big windows to keep a clear view ahead. I love that it has apple carplay as well as starlink.

Overall pleased - except for a few minor issues.
So far have been very pleased - only feature I do not care for is the car cuts off when you stop (something to save gas) very annoying. The dealership is great to work with. The safety features are wonderful already saved me from being in an accident. Gas mileage is good so far.

Choose a subaru forester!
Subarus in general are great in the winter. I went from an impreza to a forester and I absolutely loved both models. The forester is a larger version which is great for a growing family. It has a back up camera and great safety features. It also gets great miles per gallon.
accountCircle Desiree C on May 11, 2021
It comes with apple car play, and have seat warmers.
I have had issues with the four wheel drive during the winter. You can turn it on but I think it is an issue after you turn it on that it decides if you actually need the four wheel to be on. I haven’t had any issues with anything on the car. It is been great.
accountCircle Kate S on June 18, 2021
Great Subaru forester 2020.
No problems. Seats are very comfortable with ability to adjust. Technology upgrades are great and provide a sense of security.
