If you have a Honda, your dash display can send you a message that your key fob battery is running low on power. If you need to press the buttons several times for a response, this is another sign you could need to replace the battery in your Honda key.

What kind of battery goes in a Honda key fob?

You can find out what type of battery your Honda key needs by opening the fob and examining the numbers on the coin-shaped battery. The most common key battery is CR2032. Your Honda key fob could also use a CR2025 or larger CR2450 battery.

Where Can I Find One and How Much Will it Cost?

You can find Honda key batteries through online retailers and brick-and-mortar auto supply and hardware stores as well as grocery stores and department stores. Honda also sells factory-standard key batteries. You can purchase multiple battery packs or single batteries.

Replacement batteries can cost anywhere from $3.99 to $7.99, depending on your Honda model and year. The largest model of key battery is CR2450. It powers newer smart key fobs. Smaller key fobs may take smaller batteries, including CR2025.

Steps for Replacing a Honda Key Fob Battery

Before you replace your Honda key battery, make sure you know the proper replacement type. If you’re not sure how to open your Honda key fob, a video could help. After you have the new battery ready, you’ll need to locate the button that releases the metal key inside of your key fob.

After you’ve found the button that release the metal key, slide it until it releases the metal key. Here are your next steps:

  • Remove the metal key from the fob
  • Wedge the edge of the key at the top of the fob
  • Twist the key gently to separate the halves of the fob
  • Hold the bottom part of the fob while lifting the top piece
  • Carefully remove the old battery
  • Replace the new battery
  • Make sure the positive sign is facing outward

If you have problems using the metal key to open the fob, you can also use a flathead screwdriver.

If the interior parts of the fob come apart while you’re replacing the battery, don’t worry. You can line the buttons up with the faceplate, and reinsert the inner crossbar with its curvature facing upward (or outward).

Line the back of the fob up with the top half and press them together. You know the fit will be right when they snap back into place. You’ll hear and feel the snap.

If you are only replacing the battery, no reprogramming is needed. However, if you get a completely new key you will need to program it. Find key fob reprogrammers from auto supply dealers.
