What is the best air filter for my Subaru?

There are two different air filters used by the majority of Subaru vehicles. One is square while the other is a rectangular filter. Find authentic Subaru filters at Parts.Subaru.com. If you would like to save a few dollars on an aftermarket version or opt for a reusable filter, check out Advance Auto Parts for a complete array of options.

You will need to enter the year, model, engine, and transmission configuration of your ride to get matched to the proper part.

How Much Will it Cost to Buy a Replacement Subaru Air Filter?

Subaru sells its genuine filters for about $25. An aftermarket filter can cost as little as $15. If you select a washable and reusable air filter, it may cost up to $60, but it will be the last engine filter that you ever buy for your vehicle.

Do I Need an OEM or Aftermarket Subaru Air Filter?

Car manufacturers often include a premium engine air filter with the car when it is sold as new. A filter that states it is OEM is built to the same high standards as that first filter. A lower-priced aftermarket filter may not have as much filter medium or skip a layer of medium, which can allow more dust and debris to get into the engine. If you change your filters as recommended and do not operate your car under extreme conditions, the aftermarket filter should work admirably.

DIY: How to Change the Air Filter on My Subaru

You don’t need any tools to change the air filter on your Subaru. This chore should take you about 10 minutes. You just need the new filter and to use a pair of mechanic’s gloves to protect your hands.

  1. Open the hood of your car and locate the air box at the front of the passenger side of the engine compartment. There are two silver clips visible on top.
  2. Flip open the clips.
  3. Wiggle the airbox cover back a bit to give you access to the old filter.
  4. TIP: The bottom of the airbox is either secured with tabs in slots or a pinless hinge. You can remove the entire cover if you can’t get your hand in to reach the filter.
  5. Remove the old filter.
  6. Use a vacuum to remove any loose debris.
  7. Pop the new filter in place. There are no screws or tabs needed to secure it.
  8. Close the airbox cover. Verify that the bottom hinge is secure and the two clips snap into place.
  9. You are done!

Is There a Difference Between the Air Filter and the Cabin Air Filter?

The air filter on your Subaru usually refers to the engine air filter. It filters out any dust and debris from the fresh air entering the engine compartment to prevent damage to the combustion chamber. After the combustion process, this air eventually becomes exhaust, exiting through the tailpipe.

The cabin air filter ensures that dirt, leaves, and twigs cannot get into the heating and air conditioning ducts of your car. Both filters provide clean air — one for the engine, the other for the passengers.

How Long Will a New Subaru Air Filter Last?

For most Subaru drivers, it is recommended that you change your engine air filter every 15,000 to 20,000 miles, or once a year. If you consistently drive through extreme weather or road conditions, you may need to change it more often.

A clogged engine air filter can negatively impact your fuel economy. If the filter element is torn due to being clogged, dirt entering the engine can contribute to serious damage requiring expensive repairs or replacement.
