  • Factory resets may be required

Fortunately, you can rely on this article to tell you all about those Apple CarPlay problems affecting Hondas. Then, you can go into the car-buying journey with the confidence you’re taking the right steps.

Apple CarPlay Syncing Up Your Life

Apple CarPlay

As smartphones became fully integrated into our everyday lives, people began hoping for a way to connect them to their cars. Upon hearing that request, Apple came to the rescue with the creation of its CarPlay software.

With this software installed, you can link your smartphone to your car’s radio and control it from the head unit. You can then use all your favorite apps from your car, like using Apple maps and accessing your calendar.

As Apple phones go through the generations, the software has received even more new functions, like voice commands and wireless connectivity.

Honda hopped onboard just one year after its launch and installed CarPlay on its 2014 models. Since then, it has become an integral part of their vehicle builds.

Overview of Honda’s Apple CarPlay Problems

For the most part, Honda’s Apple CarPlay problems are minimal. There are a handful of issues that can come up from time to time, however. Here’s a look at the most common issues car owners have noted over the years.

Update Errors Abound

As with all software, the Apple CarPlay app can only function as intended if it has all the current updates. Unfortunately, it’s common for the updates to error out and fail to install. If that happens, the app will not sync up your phone nor operate as expected.

Not All Models Supported

Although Honda became an Apple CarPlay partner soon after its inception, not all their models are supported. Although it might change in the future, the 2016 to 2018 Accord, 2017 to 2018 Pilot, and many other models are left in the dark at this time.

Factory Resets Required

When Apple CarPlay won’t work right, it’s often necessary to try a factory data reset. This is needed most often after the Apple iOS update comes through for your phone. If that doesn’t work, you may have to take a trip to the dealership service center.

Carplay constantly crashes when using IPhone GPS app
2016 Honda Accord. One major problem perists with the information system, even after the recent software update (November 2022). When using the GPS app on either of our iPhones, the map on the car's display freezes, as if the phone is no longer sending data to the car. Eventually the Carplay app on the car just crashes, while the app on the iPhone continues to funtion normally. Despite the crash, the car radio seems to continue functioning normally, despite the information screen going blank. I have to unplug the phone and wait for the car software to reset. This sometimes takes several minutes. The dealer has tried several times to correct this, but without success. I know this is a problem with the car and not our phones, or the cables, because the Apple Car Play works fine in our other car, and the problem occurs withe the Honda using either phone, or any cable. The problem does not seem to occur when using Pandora or other phone apps via the Carplay. I am using a standard Apple brand cable.

A factory reset of the info center fixed my issue with the Apple Car Play not working. However, it is a hassle to re-pair all phones and radio/Sirius presets.
