About the Volkswagen Atlas
This is a fairly new vehicle that has only been in official production from 2017 to today. This is a larger size SUV and is perfect for those who want more space and a vehicle that they can depend on.
Most of the problems that have been listed for this vehicle are with the braking system and with the electrical system in the engine.
Engine Electrical Issues, Engine Shuts Down While Driving
NHTSA Complaint ID: 11324309
Regarding this Volkswagen Atlas problem, several different drivers state that their vehicle shut down while they were driving. One driver stated that the vehicle shut down entirely when they were on the highway going 70 miles per hour and they had to allow the car to coast to a stop and then put the car in park.
Another driver stated that the engine made strange noises while they were trying to accelerate and that there was no warning light on. Still, another driver stated that the engine shut down while driving and that the auto start disengaged each time that the engine shut down.
All of the drivers stated that they felt their lives were in danger while this was happening and that they were concerned that it may cause a wreck.
Improper Braking, Parking Brake Engaged on its Own
NHTSA Complaint ID: 11352920
Several drivers that stated that the car was traveling down the road as usual and that the emergency brake engaged on its own and without warning. One driver stated that they were driving down a steep hill and the emergency brakes came on five different times without their having engaged them.
They have also stated that the collision sensors go off without them being near anything that might be hit. Several drivers stated that the car will brake unexpectedly and that it does pose a threat of someone hitting them when the car comes to a sudden stop.
Strange Noises When the Steering Wheel Turns
NHTSA Complaint ID: 11339329
Several drivers stated that when they turn the wheel, no matter where they are turning from or how far they are turning the wheel, there is a strange either clunking noise or a squeaking noise. Another driver stated that they got a steering column locked message even though the car is in the garage and not being driven.
Others have also reported that the steering column shakes and that have trouble keeping control of the vehicle and steering. These are all issues that made it difficult to drive and did make the drivers feel that there was a threat to their safety–clearly some Volkswagen Atlas problems you shouldn’t ignore.
Unnatural Body Rust, Water in the Vehicle
NHTSA Complaint ID: 11339326
This is more of a cosmetic issue and less of a performance issue but it is still worth mentioning. Several drivers stated that the car had rust spots and there was no reason for them as the vehicle was not very old. They stated that the rust spots were around the bottom of the vehicle, specifically around the door panels.
Another driver stated that there was water in the interior storage compartment of their vehicle and they could not pinpoint where the water had gotten in or what might have caused it. They were concerned that the rust and water might damage the vehicle long term.
This is, again, a more superficial issue that does not specifically affect the overall performance or safety of the vehicle.
Fuel Propulsion System, Power Train, Fuel Pump Issues
NHTSA Complaint ID: 11283017
Another Volkswagen Atlas problem that has been reported officially is that some drivers are having issues with the fuel propulsion system. One driver stated that they had issues with not being able to put more than three gallons of gas in the gas tank each time that they fueled their vehicle.
Another driver stated that their car pretty much shut down and would not drive and that the engine lost power, and the service center suggested that it may be the fuel system.
Still, another driver stated that they had the fuel pump replaced and the fuel system worked on and there were still issues with the fuel system and with the fuel propulsion system.
