Your VW key fob gives you instant access to your passenger compartment and trunk — and all it asks for in return is a fresh battery now and then. As its battery starts to run low, you don’t have to fret. Instead, break out this guide and follow these easy steps.

First off, what type of battery does the VW key fob need?

Volkswagen key fobs use one CR2032 battery. You can easily change it with a small flathead screwdriver. Here’s where to get one, how much it will cost, and how to complete that task in just a few minutes.

Where Can I Find a VW Battery Replacement and for How Much?

The CR2032 3-volt battery used in VW key fobs is easy to find at most hardware stores, supermarkets, and other retailers near you. If you can’t get out of your house or just prefer shopping online, you can check out online retailers.

To save more money in the long run, get multi-packs from:

If you have kids or pets in the house, consider getting batteries with childproof packaging and a bitter coating. Also, remember to keep them far out of reach, but somewhere you won’t forget the next time you have to change your VW key fob battery.

Steps for Replacing the VW Key Fob Battery

After getting your hands on a new CR2032 battery, move through the following steps to keep your key fob working right.

1. Pop Off the Top of the Case

Press the button at the top of the case to flip the metal key out and leave it there. Then, look at the case to find the seam between its two sides.

Use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the case apart all along that upper seam until it breaks loose. Set the top portion of the case to the side.

2. Split the Bottom Portion Apart

Look for the seam running along the outside edges of the bottom portion of the case. Follow it to the inner portion where the two halves of the case clicked together.

Start there and use a screwdriver to gently pry the two sides apart. Make sure to work slowly and move all along the outside edge to avoid cracking the case. Set down the side with the circuit board.

3. Remove the Old VW Key Fob Battery

Take note of how the battery sits in the holder with the positive side against the contacts. Then, use your screwdriver to carefully pop the battery loose and throw it away in a secure garbage can. Put in the new battery, and the metal retainer will hold it in place.

4. Put the Case Back Together

With the battery installed, you can click the two sides of the bottom portion of the case back together. After that, slide the key side into the bottom section until it clicks. You can then fold the key back inside, and you’re all done.

Before you have to leave the house, it’s important to check that your key fob functions correctly. So, head out to your 2014 GTI or other VW and click each of the buttons while verifying it worked as intended. If not, you might need to head down to the dealership to see what’s wrong with your key fob.
