An enjoyable SUV is a fantastic thing to have, especially if you have a larger family or you just want everyone to have enough legroom. The 2013 Nissan Rogue is a great option, but it does not come without its share of common issues to watch out for.

What are some common problems to consider with a 2013 Nissan Rogue?

Though the Nissan Rogue is reliable and safes, there are still some issues you should know about.

Some of these include:

  • Engine electrical system failure, loss of engine power
  • Power train, vehicle speed control, fuel propulsion system
  • Steering issues, loss of control, issues with power steering
  • Windshield spontaneously cracks without any object hitting it
  • Faulty brakes, improperly installed brake system
  • Faulty transmission, extensive transmission issues

About the Nissan Rogue

The Nissan Rogue is a midsized SUV that is still currently in production for Nissan. The 2013 year was notorious for transmission issues but this did not stop the Rogue from becoming one of the most popular SUVs that Nissan makes.

Engine Electrical System Failure, Loss of Engine Power

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11331210

The first complaint that is fairly common with the 2013 Nissan Rogue is that the electrical system in the engine does not deliver constant power, and therefore the vehicle may lose power at stop signs, when the car is not driving very fast, or even when the vehicle is in normal use.

One owner states that their daughter was driving the vehicle when it was hot outside and the service engine light came on and the car lost power completely causing their daughter to have to coast to a stop and allow the car to sit for a time before it would start again.

It is thought that this problem may have to do with the electronic stability control for the vehicle.

Power Train, Vehicle Speed Control, Fuel Propulsion System

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11353846

Yet another issue you may face if you decide to get a 2013 Nissan Rogue is problems with the power train and with the vehicle speed control. Several drivers report that their vehicles lost power and would not accelerate when they were driving.

One driver states that they were not able to drive their Nissan Rouge for more than 30 miles at a speed of 60 mph and that the car would not accelerate going uphill even with the accelerator pressed to the floor.

These drivers also stated that when they took their vehicles in for inspection and to have the issue fixed, their mechanic told them that the vehicles also had transmission problems.

Steering Issues, Loss of Control, Issues with Power Steering

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11083850

Several drivers reported that while they were driving their Nissan Rogues, they lost control of the steering or felt as if they were having a hard time keeping in control of the vehicle.

They also stated that the steering lock light came on while driving and that it was difficult to maintain their lane when driving. Several also reported that the steering wheel popped or clicked when they turned which caused alarm.

Windshield Cracks Without Contact from any Object

NHTSA Complaint ID: 10627068

This is a rather strange complaint that many people would not think about. For five different drivers on the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration website their windshields spontaneously cracked without anything coming in contact with the glass.

Others reported that their windows fogged up very quickly and without any extenuating circumstances making it difficult to see.

There were no official reports or recalls filed and there was really no explanation for why this might have happened save for those windshields on their own may have been defective.

Faulty Brakes, Improperly Installed Braking System

NHTSA Complaint ID: 10717318

Several drivers reported that their brakes either had a delay or felt soft and did not stop their vehicle properly either resulting in an accident or in their fear that an accident may occur.

They felt that the brakes were bad or needed to be replaced. One driver took their vehicle in to be worked on and discovered that their brake lines had been improperly run and that they were not as effective as they thought initially.

The other drivers stated that their automatic braking system did not engage when they were rear-ended, resulting in injury to the passengers and extensive damage to their vehicle.

Transmission Issues, Extensive Transmission Failure

NHTSA Complaint ID: 11350010

The vast number of drivers that had transmission issues stated that when they would accelerate above a certain speed the engine would lose power, the transmission would either slip or not shift gears, and the car would then come to a stop.

Car Transmission Clutch

Many drivers stated that when they had trouble with their vehicle speed control and then took the vehicle to be inspected that further transmission issues were discovered.

Others stated that the transmission was most likely to act up when the outside temperature was very hot or when they had been driving for some time.

What to Do if Your Nissan Rogue is Having Issues?

If you have a Nissan Rogue that is experiencing any of these issues, or any issues at all for that matter, it is always in your best interest to see if you have any recalls that are active. You can find an index of active and archived recalls on the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration site.

CVT issues
At around 60,000 miles I began to lose power when the car had been in motion for several hours, the heat also contributed to when this would happen. After taking a 600mile trip I noticed the car wasn't accelerating as quickly as it normally would and when I got to my exit and stopped it took a few minutes to actually go. After getting to my distination and the car sat for a while it was okay again. At 78,000 miles I went to pick up my husband at work which is about 70 miles away. On the way back home I was passing a semi and the car stopped accelerating, and the other cars wouldn't let me over, almost causing me to have an accident. It took a lot of arguing with their complaints department to get it fixed and even then they only paid partial. Never again will I buy from Nissan, they knew they had problems with the cvt system and should have recalled these cars.
