Despite quality checks, there can still be defective parts and other problems with vehicles that affect safety and reliability. The good news is that when this happens, automakers issue a recall to let vehicle owners know to bring their vehicles in for service to remedy the situation.

How many Honda vehicles have been affected by airbag recalls?

It turns out that Honda has issued two large-scale airbag recalls that cut across several models and model years. In fact, Honda has even had to issue recalls for replacement airbags that were installed as remedies for earlier airbag recalls.

Honda Models Lineup

The recalls combined have impacted 14 Honda models spanning model years 1996 through 2016.

In this article, we’ll provide details on some of the most expansive airbag recalls that affected Honda vehicle model years 2001 to 2014, which appear to be the model years most impacted by airbag recalls.

If you own one of the affected models, you can follow the steps provided to have the issues addressed by a qualified repair specialist.

Driver Frontal Airbag Inflator May Explode

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V499000

Honda is recalling certain Honda vehicles equipped with driver frontal airbag inflators that were assembled as a remedy or replacement for an earlier recall.

These airbags can explode because the propellant can degrade after long-term exposure to high humidity, temperature and temperature cycling. If the inflator explodes, sharp metal fragments can strike the driver or other occupants, resulting in serious injury or death.

This recall includes the following Honda vehicles:

This recall began August 12, 2019. Honda has notified owners, who are advised to take their vehicles to a dealer for replacement of the driver frontal airbag inflator, free of charge.

Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 for more information and reference recall Q5A and Y58.

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safecar.gov.

Driver Frontal Airbag Inflator May Explode

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V182000

Honda has issued a recall for certain Honda vehicles due to a manufacturing error in a remedy or replacement driver airbag inflator provided as a service part for a previous Takata inflator recall.

The manufacturing error may cause the inflators to explode in the event of a crash that causes deployment of the driver frontal airbag.

This recall includes the following Honda vehicles:

  • 2001 – 2007 and 2009 Accord
  • 2001 – 2005 Civic
  • 2003 – 2005 Civic Hybrid
  • 2001 – 2005 Civic GX NGV
  • 2002 – 2007 and 2010-2011 CR-V
  • 2003 – 2011 Element
  • 2007 Fit
  • 2002 – 2004 Odyssey
  • 2003 – 2008 Pilot
  • 2006 – 2014 Ridgeline

Honda has notified owners, who are advised to take their vehicles to a dealer. The defective airbag inflator will be replaced with an alternate inflator at no cost.

This recall got underway April 10, 2019.

Owners may also contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 and reference recall 041.

Owners may also wish to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safecar.gov.

Driver’s Frontal Airbag May Rupture

NHTSA Recall ID: 15V320000

Airbag Caption Closeup

Honda has recalled a number of Honda vehicles due to a risk of airbag inflator rupture. Affected vehicles are equipped with a dual-stage frontal airbag on the driver side that can become susceptible to moisture intrusion and other factors, including manufacturing defects, that can cause the inflator to rupture over time.

If the vehicle is involved in a crash that causes deployment of the affected airbag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the driver or other occupants, causing serious injury or death.

This recall includes the following Honda vehicles:

  • 2001 – 2007 Accord
  • 2001 – 2005 Civic
  • 2003 – 2005 Civic Hybrid
  • 2001 – 2004 Civic GX
  • 2002 – 2006 CR-V
  • 2003 – 2011 Element
  • 2002 – 2004 Odyssey
  • 2003 – 2008 Pilot
  • 2006 Ridgeline

Vehicle owners who have had their driver frontal airbag replaced previously as part of a recall remedy prior to September 12, 2014 need to have their airbag replaced under this recall as well.

However, vehicles that on or after September 12, 2014 received a remedy for a prior driver frontal airbag inflator recall have already received an inflator of a different design. Therefore, these vehicles are not included in this recall and do not need further servicing.

This recall began July 1, 2015. Honda has notified owners and advised that they take their vehicles to a dealer for replacement of the driver frontal airbag inflator, free of charge.

This recall started on July 1, 2015. This recall fully supersedes recalls 08V-593, 09V-259, 10V-041, 11V-260, 14V-351 and 15V-153.

Owners requiring further information may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138.

Owners may also wish to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safecar.gov.

Improperly Installed Passenger Airbag

NHTSA Recall ID: 19V501000

Honda has issued a recall for certain Honda vehicles equipped with passenger frontal airbag inflators assembled as a recall remedy part or replacement service part that may explode due to propellant degradation that can occur after long-term exposure to heat and humidity.

This recall includes the following Honda vehicles:

  • 2003 – 2007 Accord
  • 2001 – 2005 Civic
  • 2003 – 2005 Civic Hybrid
  • 2001 – 2005 Civic GX NGV
  • 2002 – 2006 CR-V
  • 2003 – 2011 Element
  • 2007 – 2008 Fit
  • 2002 – 2004 Odyssey
  • 2003 – 2008 Pilot
  • 2006 – 2014 Ridgeline

Honda has notified owners, who are asked to take their vehicles to a dealer. The passenger frontal airbag inflator will be replaced, free of charge. This recall began August 12, 2019.

Owners may also contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138 and reference recall E5D and X5C.

Owners may also wish to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safecar.gov.

  • 2001 – 2011 Civic
