Push to start buttons have gained popularity in recent years — but are they actually a good idea?

Here, car guru Scotty Kilmer explains why the convenience of a push to start button might not be worth the issues that it can cause with how your vehicle runs.

Why shouldn’t you buy a keyless car (with a push to start button)?

YouTube car guru Scotty Kilmer says that a keyless car isn’t a good idea because keyless start systems are far more expensive to fix than old-fashioned key start systems, and they don’t necessarily make your car any harder to steal.

Thankfully, Scotty Kilmer is sharing his top tips and tricks learned from his 46 years as an auto mechanic with the public through his YouTube channel. Here, we’ll explore what he has to say about why the convenience of a keyless startup system just isn’t worth it.

Why a Keyless Car isn’t a Great Idea

There are several reasons discussed in the video why purchasing a car with a push to start button isn’t a smart move, including:

Expensive to Repair and Replace

A keyless start system utilizes many parts that work together to start the vehicle. When the system breaks down, it can require hours of labor, expensive replacement parts, and a tow to the dealer to get your car up and running again.

Dealer or Locksmith Required

To repair or replace a keyless start system, a special machine is required to program the keyless start transponder. In addition to a special machine, a code is required from the car manufacturer. While this sounds like a simple enough process, the codes are only given to dealers and bonded locksmiths.

This means that it’s impossible to repair the vehicle yourself or to use your trusted local mechanic who isn’t associated with a dealership. This allows dealers to charge extremely high fees, all while leaving you with no choice but to pay for the high repair costs if you want to start your vehicle again.

No Significant Theft Protection

One of the reasons many car manufacturers promote keyless cars is that they say they’re more difficult to steal — but you can actually achieve the same level of theft protection with a standard key startup.

An immobilizer chip can be installed in your car key, making it impossible for someone to get your car moving without the key being in the car.
