For the 2012 Nissan Altima You're going to have a timing chain whether You've got a 2.5 L 4Cylinder engine or the 3.5 L V6 engine. What this means is there is no set interval for when You need to replace the chain like You would if You had a timing belt. A belt is lightweight and made of rubber so it will wear down and need to be changed every 80,000 miles or so. The chain is a durable piece of metal that should last for a very long time under the right conditions. Make sure the chain stays lubricated by Your engine oil and You shouldn't experience many issues with it. -

The 2012 nissan altima uses a timing chain, rather than a timing belt, and will not need to be replaced.
