The 2005 Subaru Forester comes equipped with a timing belt rather than a timing chain. The Forester did end up changing to the timing chain in the year 2012. One reason why it might have ended up changing is because the chain require less maintenance then the belt. The reason why a belt requires more maintenance than the chain is because the belt is on the outside of the engine and is exposed whereas the chain is on the inside and isn't exposed. For the Forester You should change the timing belt every 60,000 to 90,000 miles or so. If it used a chain, You only need to inspect the chain every 150,000 miles or so. The cost to change the timing belt is anywhere from $240 to $380 in labor costs and extra for parts.
