The 2009 Honda Ridgeline uses a timing belt instead of a timing chain. There are a couple reasons Honda chose to go this route instead of the more reliable option of using a chain. The first is cost, it is much cheaper to produce a rubber belt than it is a metal chain. The second reason is noise, a chain makes a lot more noise than a belt does. Even with both of these reasons most manufacturers are switching to chains on all their vehicles. The Ridgeline is an interference engine which means, if the timing belt breaks while You are driving the vehicle, it will cause catastrophic damage to the internal components of the engine. This will happen because the pistons and valves are close enough to impact each other if their movements are not timed perfectly.
