The Ford Ranger's manual transmission has been known to experience hard shifting and difficulty moving into first gear due to clutch failure. Low transmission fluid can also cause errors. The master slave cylinder is known to fail as well. If the MSC fails, Ranger drivers may notice leaking fluids, an inability to shift gears, a loose or highly compromised clutch pedal and/or contaminated brake fluid. Other causes of gear loss include a bad pressure plate or disc. If either has deteriorated You'll notice squealing from the clutch as damaged pressure plate springs and bearings interfere with the disc. The average cost to replace the master cylinder on the Ranger is between $400-$500 in parts and labor.

Both manual and automatic speed ford ranger models can present problems, including stuck gears and the opposite issue, slipping gears, or even delayed shifting.
