The 2018 GMC Sierra 1500 comes equipped with a timing chain instead of a timing belt. There is little difference between the chain and the belt except for where they are located and what they are made from. The timing belt is on the outside of the engine and is exposed to things and the chain is on the inside of the engine and isn't as exposed. Because the chain is on the inside of the engine and isn't exposed to things then it should last for the life of the vehicle unlike the belt which goes through wear and tear. If a vehicle has a belt it needs to be replaced every now and then but the chain should only be inspected because things don't tend to go wrong with it.

The GMC Sierra uses a timing chain across all available engine options. The belt that you see exposed and operating all the engine accessories is a ‘serpentine belt’ or also known as an ‘accessory belt’. These are two separate parts that operate independent of each other. Do not confuse these two different parts for one another. You will not see the timing chain or timing belt on most vehicles without removing the timing cover first.
