The Toyota Yaris comes with a timing chain, which typically will give You hundreds of thousands of miles of service without needing any special maintenance, unlike timing belts. Like anything, though, they can fail. If it does, Your engine won't start, or, if You're in the process of driving, You'll hear a terrific racket as Your engine starts to smoke and shuts off. This is Your pistons being destroyed and Your valves bending, so that's not a good scene at all. If You find that You need the chain replaced (hopefully before it breaks and destroys Your engine), the cost is going to be anywhere from $500 to a grand for labor and somewhere between $100 and $250 for the parts themselves.
