The Volkswagen Tiguans all use timing chains in their engines. Typically, vehicles with timing chains are more reliable, and the chains themselves are maintenance free and a boon to owners. Typically. But the Tiguan isn't typical. On the 2009 model year, specifically, the timing chain tensioner was faulty, and caused many cars to stall while being driven. This was so blatant of an issue that a group of owners got together and brought A-Class-action lawsuit against Volkswagen. There was a settlement, but it didn't help most people experiencing the problem; the settlement only covered 25-45 percent of the repair cost when the issue occurred at over 90,000 miles, which was most the time. Vehicles over 100k miles weren't even eligible for the extended warranty. Owners who missed the deadline to file their claim even had to pay out of pocket, to the tune of $3k to replace the timing chain!
