The VW Touareg with the 3.0L V6 TDI comes standard with a timing chain on the engine rather than a belt. The timing chain is the superior option because it does not need to be serviced like a belt. In general a belt will need to be replaced every 60,000 to 100,000 miles and a chain should easily last over 300,000 miles. This means that You will not have to deal with the expensive service of changing out a component in Your timing system. That said it is still important to take a look under the timing cover and inspect the water pump and chain. The water pump controls the cooling system in Your vehicle and needs to stay working to keep from overheating. It is also a good idea to check the chain to make sure that it has not gotten loose over time.
