The auto start-stop on the Toyota Highlander is designed to reduce harmful emissions and improve fuel economy. It does this by shutting off combustion when the Highlander comes to a complete stop or reaches 0 miles per hour. The car is automatically restarted when the brake pedal is released. The system operates without driver input but can be disabled if the owner prefers. Note: start-stop is automatically disabled if the system detects a low battery charge or ambient temperatures are excessively hot. To shut off the start-stop feature, depress the Auto Stop-Stop button located to the left of the steering wheel. A light will illuminate and flash to indicate it's turned off. To re-activate depress the button again.
