The oil capacity for the 2009 GMC Sierra 1500 iS4.5 quarts with a filter for the 4.3 L V6 and 6 quarts with a filter for the rest of the engines which are 4.8 L V8, 5.3 L V8, 6.0 L V8 and A6.2 L V8 engine. The type of oil that the truck needs is 0W-30 if the temperature is below -20 F and 5W-30 for when the temperature is above -20 F and that is for all the engines for the Sierra. It is important to use oil because it keeps the engine clean and helps with the friction of moving parts. An oil change needs to be done every time the oil light comes on or every year, whichever comes first.
