A failed brake light can be due to a blown fuse, faulty wiring harness or a bulb that needs replacing. The recommended replacement bulb size for the Ford Focus Hatchback is #3157. To replace, open the hatch and locate the two wing nuts inside holding the lamp in place. They are positioned on either side of the vehicle's rear. One is below a plastic flap and the other is mounted above. Open the flap to loosen nut #1. Loosen nut #2 in the same way. From outside the car gently pull the assembly from the fRame. With access to the rear of the assembly, find the brake light plug (which is grey) and turn it counterclockwise to remove. Replace with new bulb and reverse the steps for closing.

It is possible for the turn signal or brake light to work but the taillight part to be burnt out - replacing the bulb on your focus will restore functionality to both

Put the lights off, and open the trunk. Remove the plastic screws and with a socket wrench take out two case nuts. Remove and replace bulb.
