To change the vacuum pump on a Ford Transit You should follow these steps. First remove the belt and drain the water. Next take off all pipe work and remove the intercooler pipe. The vacuum pipe is held on with a quick release fitting simply push the collar in and pull out the pipe then unbolt the pump and remove the pump from block. But what does a vacuum pump do exactly. Well a vacuum pump has the inlet hooked up to one or both valve covers, sometimes the valley pan. It SUCKS the air from the engine, thus reducing the air pressure build up created by blow due to combustion gases going past the piston rings into the pan.
