When you have a check engine light come on in your Ford Taurus the first thing that you should do is stop driving as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with a check engine light on can cause permanent damage to your vehicle's engine or other systems. Once you have stopped you can use an OBD II scan tool to read the codes that are stored in your vehicle's ECU. There are different grades of OBD II scan tools. Some of the cheaper OBD II scan tools can only read the basic codes, and more expensive more advanced ones can read codes and change progRamming paRameters in your car. When shopping for an OBD II scan tool I recommend with going with one that is in the middle of the price range so you get some more advanced features without breaking the bank on a dealership level scan tool.

Insert the key into the ignition. Turn the car on and off quickly, ending with the key in the "on" position.

You will need an obd 2 scanner to check your codes on a ford taurus. Most auto supply houses have the equipment to do this for you, free of charge.
