The simpleSTSolution to cleaning an EGR valve on a Ford transit is to purchase a fuel injector cleaner, such as Wynn's or Seafoam's, both which advertise cleaning. A more in-depth solution warrants a bit of context; since around the 60s, car manufacturers have put in Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) vales in order to cut down on nitrous oxide emissions. What happens is the valve basically sounds some of the exhaust back into the combustion cycle, which has the effect of cooling the reaction down a little, keeping the gases in the chamber at a stable temperature when the engine's fully warmed up. Keeping the valve clean addresses both stalls and rough idling when the valve is closed too long, and pre-mature detonation when it's remained open longer than it should. Inspect Your vacuum hose for any cracks or carbon deposits, and clean those off; this is attached to the EGR valve. Then, physically disconnect the valve, and clean the entry port. You can spray it with carb cleaner and use a brush to remove any of the carbon buildup here as well.
