If You need to open the hood on a BMW X5 the procedure does vary depending on the model year but not too much. Generally before the 2012 model year all You will need to do is pull the handle located in the driver's footwell and then go around to the hood and feel for the release handle and grab that to open it. If You have an X5 that is newer than 2012 all You need to do is pull the handle in the driver's footwell twice to release it. There is not any secondary handle and the hood should be able to just be lifted up. BMW changed this in an effort to make it easier to open the hood.

To open the hood of the BMW X5 you will find a latch under the hood itself and you will find a button on the main console dash to the left of the steering wheel.
