To turn on four-wheel-drive on the Toyota Highlander You need to hit the 4WD button on the gear shift. This will make it so all the tires turn under power at the same time. This gives You more control and power in rough or icy terrain, but it also means You will burn gas a lot faster. To turn the system off just hit the button again. In general, You should only drive under 4WD when You need to, as it is harder on the car and it will cost You more in gas.

The toyota highlander is awd, and the car can allocate the maximum drive torque to the front and rear wheels automatically. You don't need to do anything during normal driving to get the maximum traction and fuel economy. In case you need more torque to the rear wheels, such as if the vehicle is stuck on ice or snow, there is a lock mode that you can turn to. Once the vehicle reaches 25 miles per hour (mph), the lock mode disengages.
