Most rear differential problems of the 2000 Chevy Silverado involve pinion gears or seals wearing excessively and causing grinding noises and degradation of axle function. In addition, a newly installed GM rear differential and axles experience extremely high operating temperatures while hauling for the first 500 miles, and can break down gear oil. The manufacturer recommends a differential oil change after the first 500 miles of the vehicle's life, using 75W-90 full synthetic. Once flushed and broken in, service can be extended for another 40,000-50,000 miles and the axles should no longer exert the same heavy demands on the gear oil. Pinion gear seal replacement costs between $240-$400, but replacing the gears is priced at $1,500 or more in parts and labor.

If the 2000 Chevy silverado is having rear end or rear differential noise then it is likely because the gears have become worn due to overloading and lubrication failure
