The 2008 Mercedes SL550 is noted for experiencing issues with its proprietary hydraulic suspension or "body control system" which is known to suffer from fluid leaks and failure. The SL550's body control system has been the subject of numerous consumer complaints. Failures occur on average at a little over 50,000 miles and involve leaks from the tandem pump, hydraulic lines, struts, and/or seals. The SL550 also suffers from faulty trunk and door closure due to pneumatic system leaks. Owners complain of not being able to fully close the 550's trunk and door locks working intermittently. Often the PSE pump burns out and cost of replacing is over $500. The third largest complaint registered for this Mercedes includes camshaft adjuster solenoid replacement that throws the P0015 code and causes the "check engine" light to come on. The fault is common on new vehicles under warranty.

There are not any specific issues with the 2008 mercedes sl550, however due to the age of the vehicle it is likely there will be issues with the engine or transmission. Rust or damaged metal could have set in over time. Likewise the brake lines and other fluid lines should be checked for dry rot and leaks. Brake pads will likely need to be replaced and tires should be checked for age and rot. The oil and oil pump should be checked for rot on the lines, and cracks in the pan. There may also be dead or damaged wires and blown fuse causing electrical problems throughout the vehicle.
