The 2017 Subaru Forester and some subsequent models have been known to suffer from malfunctioning liftgates. Specifically, owners find they are unable to open the hatch with either the key fob or the inside hatch release button. The liftgate may often be unlocked manually, but automatic power to the gate appears to be disabled. The failure happens at less than 5,000 miles or upon new purchase. Others complain the liftgate refuses to latch and gets stuck in the open position. Repair involves replacing the load sensor and/or repairing latch pins and electrical wiring. Once the latch is restored, perform a reset of the liftgate by opening fully and then closing to re-calibrate. Most adjustments can be made under warranty.
