The most common boot lock problems with a BMW 1 Series are usually caused by a problem with the lock actuator. When the actuator fails to engage then the lock will not work. Another common problem with the BMW 1 Series boot lock is with the actual latch itself. If this becomes damaged or out of alignment then it will not properly shut and latch. This can lead to it popping open while You are driving. The system also uses the body control module to control it and if there is a problem with it that will lead to it not working. Usually that will need to be fixed by a dealership if there is a software problem.
