BMW owners using the 8-speed automatic transmission often complain of jerky shifting between first and second gears when accelerating from a stop or while driving at lowered speeds. Whistling noises are also associated with the 8HP while backing up or reversing. In both cases these issues repeat themselves across multiple drivers and 8-speed transmissions. Under certain circumstances dealerships can perform a "relearn" of the tranny that results in smoother functioning. Other solutions include disconnecting the BMW's battery for 30 minutes or more and then reconnecting. Driving at highway speeds for several hours seems to improve the 8HP's operation as well. To service the ZF8HP have the tranny fluid changed at least every 50,000 miles or every 40,000 miles if driven hard.
