Owners of some models of BMW's manufactured after 2006, including the BMW X1, complain of a noisy front differential that can result in replacement. Fault is attributed to an engineering flaw. Roller bearings are used to move the axles and can cause excessive wear and noise over time. BMW has since made a kit available for upgrading the front differential but repair is costly. Replacing the existing assembly averages almost $5,500 in parts and labor. Installing an upgrade averages under $1,500. Signs the differential is going bad include grinding gear noises, excessive oil consumption, clunking and "howling" noises. Drivers may also find it difficult to steer. Always maintain proper lubrication of axle bearings. The X1 useS75W-90 oil in its front wheels.

If the BMW X1 is having an issues with the front differential or front end then you will hear a whirring sound when stopping. This is from loose or damaged pinion bearings.
