A major defect of 2017 and earlier Hyundai Santa Fe's, has been the failure of the crankshaft position sensor. The sensor monitors the position, speed and rotational effort of the engine's crank and this information is used by the car's ECU to manage timing and fuel injection. In the Santa Fe's 2.7-liter V6, 3.3-liter V6, and 3.5-liter V6 engines, the CPS failed and exposed drivers to hazardous situations. Some owners reported their vehicle suddenly stopping while being driven in the middle of traffic. Others described lurching motions and the inability of reaching speeds greater than 10 miles per hour. Often the vehicle would fail to start or restart after stalling in the middle of the road. Subsequent models of the Santa Fe manufactured after 2017 have not demonstrated these sensor errors.
