There are two main sources of problems with the gearbox in a Toyota Corolla, one is mechanical and one is electrical. Each of them will make Your transmission not work properly but they each have different symptoms they exhibit. The first is a mechanical problem. When there is a problem with Your gears they will usually make excessive noise and shift very roughly between gears. You will want to also make sure to check the fluid in Your transmission for any signs of metal shavings. The second is an electrical problem with the transmission control module. When this fails You will notice that there is a delayed shift between gears and You also may notice that the vehicle feels like it is hunting to figure out what gear to go into.
