Some of the symptoms of a bad starter motor on the Volkswagen Touareg are a whirring or faSTSpinning noise when You turn the key, or You'll just hear a clicking sound, and it's obvious the engine isn't rotating. Now, the first thing You should check is that You've got enough power in the battery to allow the starter to function. Next, verify none of the wires in the wiring harness have been compromised, and also, check the relay for the starter. If You've completed those steps, I'd recommend trying a used starter if You can find one, just to verify it completely before shelling out for a whole new one: You'll pay the MSRP of $640.00 if You buy it straight from Volkswagen's public facing part site (part number 077911023J).

If your starter is failing in your VW Touareg you will notice difficulty cranking your engine even with the headlights on and hear a clicking sound when turning the key in the ignition.
