For the Ford Ranger there are nearly 2,000 different DTC codes that can be displayed when You have a fault with the engine. You will need to use an OBD II scan tool to read the codes that are stored in the ECU from whatever caused the light or DTC system to turn on in Your truck. The most common reason that a check engine light will come on is because there is a vacuum leak detected, and this is usually caused by a loose gas cap. There can also be problems that come up with fuel delivery, and various sensors in the engine. Once You have a DTC code You should be able to reference it against a chart and determine what has gone wrong with the truck.

You can find ford ranger dtc (diagnostic trouble) codes on the car's owner manual. These codes are used by the manufacturers to diagnose problems related to vehicles.
