The Chevy Cruze will make a ticking sound due to something referred to as a "piston slap". This is the result of a sound made by the pistons, found in the lower portion of the engine. This is a serious issue, as it can only be repaired by rebuilding Your engine. The sound itself is produced when the skirts of the pistons smack against the sides of the cylinders when moving back and forth. The pistons are rocking the bore, and combustion occurs prematurely.

A common ticking noise is caused by piston slap is a ticking sound coming from the lower parts of the engine (the pistons moving in the cylinders). If you have piston slap, you may need to replace the entire bottom half of the engine to get rid of the sound.
