Owners of the 2016 Chevy Cruze complain of a ticking noise from under the hood that can sometimes be attributed to loose spark plugs or a stretched timing chain tensioner. A much more common cause in all vehicles is valvetrain malfunction. As valves open and close in the engine they may produce a ticking sound if their movement in relation to other parts of the engine is compromised. Low oil levels can contribute to valvetrain noise and should be addressed immediately to prevent engine damage. Bad bearings in the connecting rods can also create a "knock" or "tick" while operating. Specifically in the Cruze, however, a mechanical and constant tick can form when the purge valve solenoid is faulty and needs to be replaced.
