If the engine cranks but will not start on Your 2004 Ford F-350 diesel, this may be caused by damaged wiring to the high-pressure fuel pump. Wiring to the pump can be chafed, which causes the pump to stop working. The chafed wires will need to be accessed and repaired. Many owners reported having this problem. When You turn the switch to on, not start, You should hear the fuel pump prime for 2 seconds and then turn off. You should hear it prime every time You turn the key to run. If it's not priming(humming in the tank)it is not starting.

This has more to do with the starter system then the diesel engine. It could be a faulty starter system.
