The crank sensor on a 2002 Mazda Protege can be found at the bottom of the engine near the crankshaft. This is near the crankshaft since the main job of it is to measure the rotation of it. The crankshaft position sensor will let Your ECU know where in the rotation the crankshaft is. This allows it to add air fuel and spark to the engine to complete the detonation in the cylinders. When the sensor is acting up You may notice that Your engine runs very rough or has problems knowing when to fire. This can lead to mIS Fires and potential knocking inside Your engine so it is something You should replace if it is failing.
