The Ford Transit fault code p1402 indicates a malfunction in the Engine Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve position (EVP) sensor circuit. The EGR valve recirculates finely metered quantities of exhaust gas to the engine intake system. It increases engine efficiency, reduces fuel consumption, and lower NOx emissions. Symptoms of a bad EGR valve include: rough idling or stalling, a smell of fuel, increased fuel consumption, pinging, tapping, or knocking sounds, and a check engine light on. An EGR valve can fail in two ways: It can be open all the time, or it can be closed all the time.
