Typically a ticking noise in the engine indicates low oil levels or the fuel pump is going out. In the Toyota Tacoma this sound is more likely caused by self-cleaning fuel injectors. The technology was introduced by Toyota engineers in 2015 and works to keep them free of carbon buildup. Over time clogged fuel injectors will degrade the car's performance. You might notice this ticking sound for at least 10 minutes or as little aS-10 seconds after driving at high speeds and moving into a "hot" idle, or one where the engine temperature is high. The system records the number of cycles the injectors have been through, their temperature and how long the vehicle was driven to activate the self-cleaning mode.

Low oil, valve tapping noise. Dealer didn't even check the oil. Left and got the oil changed and it was almost out of oil. Problem solved.
