The 2016 and newer Toyota Tacomas had a rear differential recall due to incorrectly tightened torque nuts which led to leaks. The leaks could then damage the rear differential leading to even bigger problems, often having to replace them entirely. Many owners report the sounds as a howling noise, but some other common noises can be rumbling when turning, or a clunking sound every few feet. If Youre experiencing any of these sounds and Your Tacoma is 2016 or newer, contact Your dealership so they can fix the recall problem for You. If You have an older Tacoma and notice these sounds, its worth takeng Your car in for it to be diagnosed properly. It may still be a rear differential problem that You need to have addressed.

A noise in the rear differential of a toyota tacoma could be related to low fluid. Check fluid level and if low refill it. Otherwise it could be a worn bearing or gear mechanism internally.
