The 2005 Subaru Legacy has a 2.5 L 4Cylinder engine that needs SAE 5W-30 oil. The amount that the Legacy takes iS4.4 quarts with a filter. Oil is used in a car to keep the engine clean and running smoothly and to help with friction of moving parts when they rub together. The oil in the car should be changed every 7,000 miles or every 3,500 miles if it is a Turbo. It used to be every 7,000 miles for the Turbo also but Subaru changed it to every 3,500 for the Turbo and for all years after 2005. The cost of a change if done by a professional is anywhere from $20 to $30 in just labor costs.

The 2005 Subaru Legacy's engine options (2.5L box-4 turboed and non-turboed) both use 5W-30 synthetic oil.
