The 2017 Ford Explorer 3.5L engine use a screw on canister and it has a thread pattern of M22 X1.50. You will need to use a 3/8" wrench or ratchet in order to remove it. The filters that are used on the vehicle are attached at the bottom of the engine next to the oil pan and are made out of aluminum. They have a filter medium inside of them that is there to help remove contaminants from the oil and prevent them from getting back into the engine. You should change the oil and filter every 7,500 miles in Your Explorer if You are using synthetic oil.
