The 2004 Ford Explorer came stock with A5-speed 5R55 automatic transmission. This transmission is known for having a long life span and will more than likely not need to be rebuilt or replaced for over 200,000 miles of usage. You will have the best performance with this transmission if You are using Motorcraft Mercon V automatic fluid. This transmission with have a total fluid capacity of 13.9 US quarts so it will be rather expensive to fill up. You will be looking at spending somewhere between $70 and $110 in fluid costs though this will be cheaper than the $220 to $280 You will likely spend if You take it in to a mechanic.
