The 2001 Mercedes S430 uses SAE 5W-30 engine oil. Mercedes recommends that You use synthetic oil any time that You need to change it. There are two main types of oil on the market these days, conventional and synthetic. Conventional is an older type of oil that is petroleum based. Synthetic is newer and is engineered in a lab to give You greater wear protection and longer life. This means that You should only need to change synthetic every 7,500 miles compared to 3,500 to 5,000 miles with conventional. I recommend that You check Your oil at least once a month. You will want to make sure that the oil is full and free from signs of burning or debris.
